Kalecik Castle
A dramatic cliff-top fortress founded by Galatians in 275 BC overlooking the Kızılırmak River valley, later fortified by Romans and Seljuks.
Perched on a commanding volcanic peak 71 km northeast of Ankara, Kalecik Castle is one of the capital province’s most majestic fortifications, initially erected around 275 BC by Galatian tribes.
Surveying the winding Kızılırmak River basin and historic vineyards, the citadel features internal stone cisterns, subterranean storehouses, and defensive watchtowers.
