Deriving its ancient name 'Ankyra' from the Greek word for ship's anchor, Ankara has been continuously inhabited for millennia across the fertile high plains of Central Anatolia under Hittite, Phrygian, Lydian, and Persian rule.
In the 3rd century BC, it became the royal capital of the Celtic Galatians, before being annexed in 25 BC as the imperial capital of the Roman province of Galatia. During the 13th and 14th centuries, Ankara was governed by the unique guild-based Ahi civic democracy before joining the Ottoman Empire.
On December 27, 1919, Atatürk chose Ankara as the headquarters of the National Resistance. On April 23, 1920, the Grand National Assembly convened here, and on October 13, 1923, Ankara was officially proclaimed the permanent capital of the Republic of Turkey.
