Midas Tumulus
A 53-meter-tall monumental tumulus sheltering the world's oldest intact standing wooden tomb chamber, constructed for King Midas in the 8th century BC.
The largest of roughly 100 tumuli surrounding Gordion, the Great Tumulus was built in the late 8th century BC (c. 740 BC) for King Midas (or his father Gordios). Standing 53 meters tall with a diameter of nearly 300 meters, it is an awe-inspiring man-made earthen mountain.
Excavated in 1957, its core revealed a perfectly preserved cedar and juniper log chamber—the world's oldest standing wooden structure. The astonishing funerary banquet inventory, including bronze cauldron vessels, inlaid geometric wooden screens, and furniture, is displayed at the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations.
