Gordion / Yassıhöyük
The UNESCO World Heritage capital of the ancient Phrygian Kingdom in Polatlı Yassıhöyük, home to King Midas and the legend of the Gordian Knot.
Located 18 km west of Polatlı at Yassıhöyük, Gordion served as the majestic capital of the Phrygian Kingdom. Situated at the junction of ancient royal trade routes along the Sakarya River, it was named after King Gordios.
Gordion is world-famous as the site where Alexander the Great sliced the enigmatic Gordian Knot in 333 BC to seal his destiny as conqueror of Asia. Inscripted on the UNESCO World Heritage list, it features the monumental Early Phrygian City Gate, royal megaron palaces, the world's oldest known pebble mosaic floors, and a landscape of over 100 monumental burial mounds.
